A graphic novel adaptation of the middle section of Victor Hugo’s The Toilers of the Sea by cartoonist Adam Gillson, and writer Nathanial Eker-Male. Both collaborators are from Guernsey, where the novel is set. The story focuses on Gilliatt, a Frenchman brought up in Guernsey. He undertakes a perilous quest by boat to retrieve a unique and technologically advanced engine from the wreck of a ship owned by Mess Lethierry, an old Guernsey shipbuilder. Lethierry has promised the hand in marriage of his niece, Deruchette, to whoever can bring back the engine, which is stuck in the hostile reefs of Les Douvres rocks.
Funding for getting the book printed and other administrative costs were provided by Guernsey Arts and the Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society.
