13 Sep Victor Hugo’s ‘The Intervention’ – its world premiere in English
The Victor Hugo in Guernsey Society presents the world premiere in English of Victor Hugo’s The Intervention (written in Guernsey in 1866). Members of the Society and local actors and musicians, all volunteers and amateurs, worked together to produce and perform this one-act comedy, part of Hugo’s Theatre in Freedom (Théâtre en Liberté), at the Performing Arts Centre in Guernsey as part of the Society’s Victor Hugo Weekend in 2018.
The Society would like to thank its public and private sponsors, including the Guernsey Arts Commission, and all the dedicated team who made this wonderful evening possible. Part of the reason the Society took on this project was to introduce this play to schoolchildren, for whom it is quite suitable (recommended age 14 and above). The Society has produced a script, a film and materials for anglophone schools and colleges based on the play and the social issues raised in it, and on Hugo’s life and work. They are free to download on this site. Please do take them and use them – we would love to hear and share what you do with them!
